Is it anti-ageing or anti-aging?

Both anti-ageing and anti-aging are correct. Aging is the preferred spelling in North America (United States and Canada), while ageing is the preferred spelling outside of North America (Great Britain and Australia). While cosmetic treatments, such as botox and fillers, can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, lifestyle changes can prevent wrinkles. To understand anti-aging products, you need to understand how the signs of aging manifest on your skin.

Collagen, the protein that forms a matrix between the layers of the skin and helps it look tight and smooth, begins to break down. Years of sun exposure can cause dark spots that no longer disappear like those cute summer freckles used to. Hyperpigmentation, darker spots on the skin, can also occur after an acne outbreak. A range of anti-aging creams are available, including options for the skin of the face, neck, hands or the entire body.

The November issue of Allure will rededicate itself to the subject of anti-aging, although Lee declined to provide further details. A UK public health organization released a report in June recommending that the cosmetics industry abandon the term anti-aging for good, citing “harmful attitudes towards older people. A treatment known as anti-aging is one that is a global treatment designed to address the signs of aging in a general and holistic way. To see it cynically, marketing these products without focusing on age is a smart and diabolical way to get younger women to buy more, while subtly feeding them an anti-aging agenda.

The American Academy of Dermatologists (AAD) recommends that all adults use a moisturizer and sunscreen every day, two important anti-aging products that help protect the skin from UV rays and keep it soft and supple. Lee took the criticism he received in stride, and says he also received many positive comments about his magazine's anti-aging initiative, including from AARP. The industry claims that it is moving away from anti-aging language and yet it sells the same products and ingredients. Any treatment that is described as anti-aging is a treatment that targets the signs of aging described above.

Anti-aging treatments work holistically to treat MANY signs of aging, including wrinkles, while an anti-wrinkle treatment specifically targets wrinkles and aims to reduce the appearance of lines on the face. But the move away from anti-aging language is a window into how the modern beauty and marketing industry works. Allure's anti-aging ban sparked conversation for weeks later, both inside and outside the beauty industry, including a scathing New York Times article by Amanda Hess, whose biggest criticism was that not using the term “anti-aging” would only encourage the industry to use other euphemisms to sell products. Many ingredients that brands use in products that promise shine and radiance are the same ones that have been used in products that are explicitly considered anti-aging.

The AAD also recommends that people establish an effective anti-aging skincare routine at age 40 and 50. Read on to learn more about wrinkles and learn about the most effective anti-aging treatments available today.
